Embedded PCB 4G Antenna Selection for IoT Devices

2026-09-11

A PCB 4G antenna can provide an internal cellular connection for IoT devices without an external rod. The practical choice is between an antenna trace built into the main PCB and a separate antenna PCB connected to the radio. These formats have different layout and assembly requirements, so they should not be treated as the same component.

Key specifications and selection criteria

Item Details
Example cellular ranges 698–960 / 1710–2700 MHz
Nominal impedance 50 Ω
700 MHz example 0.03 dBi gain; 51.35% efficiency
850 MHz example 1.51 dBi gain; 70.71% efficiency
2700 MHz example 2.18 dBi gain; 61.25% efficiency
Measurement context Reference example only; validate the selected device configuration

Mainboard trace or separate antenna PCB

A mainboard antenna uses a defined section of the device PCB and requires its own layout and clearance. A separate FR4 antenna board can be positioned elsewhere in the enclosure and connected by a feed cable. Choose the arrangement that fits the RF and mechanical design, including manufacturing and service access.

Start with modem and market bands

The reference example lists 698–960 MHz and 1710–2700 MHz. Check the required cellular bands against the actual antenna version and installed performance. LTE Cat.1 and Cat.4 identify modem capabilities; those labels alone are not sufficient antenna specifications.

Keep measured performance tied to frequency

The example data includes gain of 0.03 dBi at 700 MHz, 1.51 dBi at 850 MHz and 2.18 dBi at 2700 MHz. These values illustrate why a single summary gain range can be misleading. Compare frequency-resolved data using the same reference geometry and feed arrangement.

Reserve clearance and verify the enclosure

Nearby metal, batteries and ground structures affect the antenna. Define the keep-out area and feed before closing the mechanical design. Test the complete unit and repeat the RF check when enclosure materials, cable routing or major components change. Internal placement can simplify the exterior, while enclosure design still determines sealing.

Frequently asked questions

Is an internal antenna automatically cheaper?

Cost depends on the design, materials, assembly and validation requirements. Compare the complete device implementation.

Can the same PCB antenna work in every enclosure?

No. The surrounding structure can alter performance. Validate the actual layout and housing.
