NB-IoT and LTE Cat.1 Antennas for Smart Meters

2026-09-11

A smart meter antenna connects the meter’s radio to the cellular network. For NB-IoT and LTE Cat.1 equipment, the choice should follow the modem bands, enclosure and installation location. Water meters, gas meters and electricity meters can present very different RF conditions even when they use the same cellular technology.

Key specifications and selection criteria

Item Details
Radio applications NB-IoT and LTE Cat.1, subject to modem/network compatibility
Reference example bands 824–960 / 1710–2690 MHz
Nominal RF impedance 50 Ω
Possible form factors PCB, FPC, spring or external arrangement
Deployment checks Enclosure shielding, installed reception and reporting duty cycle

Specify the deployment bands first

NB-IoT and LTE Cat.1 equipment operates in particular network bands. Compare the modem and intended operator with the antenna’s measured coverage. The reference example lists 824–960 MHz and 1710–2690 MHz; it should not be generalized into support for every low-band network.

Choose an antenna form that suits the enclosure

PCB, FPC and spring antenna approaches offer different mechanical arrangements. An external antenna may be appropriate where the meter enclosure or cabinet obstructs an internal radiator. A metal enclosure requires a deliberate RF path; an antenna cannot simply remove the shielding effect by being described as anti-metal.

Evaluate the actual installation

A meter tested on a bench may behave differently in a pit, basement or cabinet. Test with the cover, nearby metal and mounting geometry in place. Where coverage is marginal, assess placement and the complete radio configuration before committing to a large deployment.

Keep battery-life claims at system level

Antenna efficiency can affect the link, but battery life also depends on the modem, reporting interval, coverage, retransmissions and battery capacity. Build the power budget around the meter’s real duty cycle. Do not present a fixed number of operating years as an antenna specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can one smart meter antenna serve every country?

Only if its actual band coverage and installation meet the modem and local network requirements. Confirm the target markets.

Will an antenna guarantee five to ten years of battery life?

No. Estimate battery life from the complete meter design and representative operating conditions.
