  Discretization Design Method of Antennas

The discretization design method of antennas has emerged as a powerful approach in modern antenna design, offering several advantages and unique capabilities.

In the discretization design process, the antenna structure is divided into discrete elements. This can be achieved through various techniques such as using an array of small radiating elements or by discretizing the surface of a continuous antenna structure. For example, in a microstrip patch antenna, the patch can be divided into smaller sub – patches or pixels. Each of these discrete elements can have its own electrical properties, such as impedance, resonant frequency, and radiation pattern.

One of the main benefits of the discretization design method is the ability to achieve highly customized radiation patterns. By independently controlling the properties of each discrete element, designers can shape the antenna’s radiation pattern in a very precise manner. This is particularly useful in applications where the antenna needs to direct the radiation in specific directions or cover a particular angular range. For instance, in a wireless communication base station antenna, the discretization method can be used to create a radiation pattern that focuses the signal towards the areas with high user density while minimizing radiation in other directions to reduce interference.

Another advantage is the flexibility in frequency tuning. Each discrete element can be designed to resonate at different frequencies or have adjustable resonant frequencies. This allows for the creation of multi – band or tunable antennas. By changing the electrical parameters of the discrete elements, the antenna can be made to operate at different frequency bands, which is highly desirable in modern communication systems that require compatibility with multiple frequency standards.

Moreover, the discretization design method enables easy integration with other electronic components. The discrete elements can be connected to active components such as transistors or diodes for functions like beam – forming or signal amplification. This integration can lead to the development of more intelligent and sophisticated antenna systems. However, the discretization design also comes with challenges. The complexity of the design increases as the number of discrete elements grows, requiring more advanced simulation and optimization tools. Additionally, the manufacturing process needs to be carefully controlled to ensure the accurate realization of the designed discrete structure. the discretization design method of antennas opens up new possibilities for advanced antenna design.
